HI Guys right I need some help and advise,

I started my G40 up last Friday to take it for an MOT drove it 2 miles down the road and it cut out :( im lost as to what it can be

first I pulled the fuel relays out cleaned them with contact cleaner

I have a constant spark when cranking ( not sure if its a weak spark or not but it sparking cyl 1)
The external Pump primes when you turn the ignition on
I have a 12v feed both when priming and cranking and both pumps
and both pumps work and can be heard working when giving a 12v direct feed

arghhhhhh help anyone

Dead ignition switch? They go brittle and crack and the contacts slip out of place and can cause all sorts of fun and games

My VR used to just be completely dead when I tried to start it, gave the key a wiggle and it would be fine. A mates golf did it until the switch wouldn't turn in the end

Its really a case of going through every component with a tester one by one, the electrical components on these aren't the most reliable anymore. Check thats theres power at the two relays by the ecu. One controls the power to the fuel pumps (since you can hear them this should be fine), the second controls the ecu main power supply, this is the five pin one. Check that its operating correctly, i had this go on mine.

Check your hall sensor looks fine, i've heard of these coming loose and the trigger wheel chewing through. Check the plug to this is properly on.

Then check after cranking to see if the plugs smell of fuel, and that you have a decent spark at all of them.

you wouldn't happen to have a spare 5 pin relay would you just to double check??

I don't i'm afraid. They are easy to test with a 12v tester at the back. VW discontinued them in 2010, and they are GT/G40 specific, i spent ages looking for a second hand one. In the end i used a Mk3 Golf GTi one, which has the same internal circuit, you just have to change the locations of the terminals in the mounting block and change one of the terminals for a smaller one.

Get yourself a cheap eBay code reader and a 2x2 adapter.

How did it cut out? Did it just drop out instantly or did it splutter/cough/grind to a halt?

What did the rev counter do when it dropped out? Did it drop down to zero or keep showing the engine speed?

What does it do now? Spins over but doesn't try to start at all, or do cylinders try to fire?
